Ship Cancelled After Fatal Incident of Woman Left Behind on Remote Island
An extensive two-month cruise around the Land Down Under has been cancelled following the fatal incident of an senior female passenger who was stranded by the vessel on a distant island.
The elderly woman had been trekking on Lizard Island with fellow passengers from the vessel, but separated from the party for a break. The ship left without her and came back after some time after the crew realised the lady was not present.
A large-scale hunt found her remains the subsequent day.
Authorities are looking into the incident, alongside law enforcement and the medical examiner.
Chief Executive of the cruise operator announced that travelers and personnel on the vessel were told that the remainder of the cruise had been terminated due to the "sad loss and previous mechanical issues".
Through an announcement, he further stated that guests would be given a full refund, and said the company was working "to coordinate the return journeys of the individuals via private aircraft".
Officials also published an revised announcement, and said they had "delivered a notice to the Master" prohibiting any new passengers from getting on the liner.
The official said that they would attend the vessel in the port city upon its return.
Chronology of Occurrences
The vessel first departed the Australian port on October 24th, and was only 48 hours into the expedition at the moment of the senior passenger's death. Lizard Island was the opening port on the journey.
Passengers on the ship - who typically pay large sums of dollars to participate in the voyage - were ferried there for a daily excursion with the choice of trekking or snorkelling.
Family Response
The offspring of the deceased woman said that her loved ones was "shocked and distressed that the liner left the island after an scheduled tour without my mother".
Via her announcement, she portrayed her mum as an "active octogenarian" who was a member of a walking organization.
"From the little facts we have been provided, it appears that there was a breakdown of attention and basic judgment," she stated.
She further stated that she desired the examination would be able to identify what "the organization should have undertaken that might have preserved Mum's being".
"According to reports from the authorities that it was a extremely warm period, and she fell ill on the hill climb," she explained.
"She was asked her to return, without accompaniment. Then the vessel left, apparently without doing a headcount.
"At some stage in that process, or not long after, she succumbed, without company."
Operator Position
In a statement, the Chief Executive affirmed that the company was "collaborating extensively with investigators to support their examination".
He stated that the company was "very regretful that this has happened" and had provided its complete assistance to the family.
Cruise Industry Practices
The vessel accommodates up to one hundred twenty guests with nearly fifty crew, according to corporate details. It was purpose-built to enter isolated regions of the nation's shoreline and is fitted with "small boats" - small boats used to take passengers on land visits.
Events like this are uncommon, and cruise ships have protocols to record which travelers are boarding or getting off, according to industry experts.
"Leaving covertly or [back] onboard just isn't an option," one expert commented.
Shipping companies consider these methods with great importance and have "clever tech in place to avoid such events from taking place," the authority further stated.
"This appears to be presumably a shocking - and sad - isolated incident."
