India's capital Awakens to Toxic Haze After Diwali

Tuesday brought inhabitants of the planet's dirtiest urban center found themselves breathing dangerously toxic air that was classified as the "critical" level.

Extremely High Pollution Readings

Multiple areas of the city showed an air quality index over 500, which translates to ten times the recommended level established by the global health authority.

In some locations, concentrations of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of 1,800, amounting to 15 to 20 times higher than acceptable levels.

Pyrotechnics Prohibition and Recent Developments

Beginning in 2020, the government had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of pyrotechnics during celebrations due to their significant contribution to the dangerous smog that covers the capital as winter approaches.

Nevertheless earlier this year, the current local administration appealed to the highest court to propose a relaxation of the restrictions.

Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been questioned by environmental experts as being only roughly 30 percent less polluting – as a compromise between "tradition and ecological concerns".

Court Ruling and Reality

To the disappointment of medical and ecological activists, judicial authorities agreed to the appeal, specifying that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during designated time windows throughout the Diwali.

During the celebrations, there was extensive flouting of the designated hours across the city, with minimal enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly type.

Several monitoring devices throughout Delhi showed air quality peaking around midnight to some of the worst levels seen during celebrations in at least recent memory.

Cross-Border Consequences

The proliferation of fireworks during the festival also initiated a controversy with neighbouring the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistan's the Punjab region partially attributing worsening atmospheric conditions in Lahore on hazardous particles traveling from across the border following the events.

Long-Standing Environmental Problem

Alarmingly severe levels of atmospheric toxins in Delhi have persisted as a serious issue for more than 15 years, with the problem continuing to worsen.

Near the festival period, the levels of toxic particulate matter in the environment has been documented to shoot up to significantly exceeding the worst readings ever recorded in China's capital, which was formerly regarded as the world's most polluted city.

Diverse Pollution Contributors

This crisis in the city is caused by a mix of various sources including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, development work, garbage fires and pollutants from farm burning in neighbouring areas of Punjab and Haryana.

Throughout these areas, agricultural workers routinely set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, producing hazardous smog that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as winter air arrives.

Public Health and Economic Impact

The economic and health toll on the approximately 33 million people living in the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to numerous investigations.

These hazardous conditions causes high levels of nervous system, cardiovascular and lung disorders, and can potentially cause cancer.

Air quality crisis is calculated to be responsible for ten thousand untimely fatalities annually in the city.
